Seeking a Dynamic Executive Director

The Cascade County Historical Society is seeking a visionary Executive Director to lead and oversee its operations, ensuring The History Museum it operates continues to serve as a dynamic exhibit and research center for North Central Montana. The Executive Director is responsible for ensuring the long-term success and financial sustainability of the Museum and has overall responsibility for supervising employees and volunteers, programs and outreach, solicitation of collections and collections and building management, following best practices regarding the acquisition, storage, cataloging, and management of its archival and museum materials.

Executive Director Employment Description

The responsibilities of the Executive Director of the Cascade County Historical Society (CCHS,) DBA: The History Museum and Research Center are to provide leadership in all museum and research center operations including but not limited to fundraising, policy implementation, financial management, collections development, exhibition development, publications, education and membership programs, community and public relations, and general administrative functions. The Executive Director works with and reports to the Cascade County Historical Society Board of Directors.

The Executive Director:

1. Is ultimately responsible for planning and ensuring that the CCHS collections, including its archival collections, are handled in the most conservationally sound manner possible and that appropriate and accurate records of the collections are maintained. The position often calls for flexibility in responding to changing conditions and unexpected demands associated with serving the public. This is especially important considering the great latitude within which the director operates.

2. Works with staff to plan and develop interpretive exhibitions.

3. Researches, writes, and manages grants used in support of programming and operation.

4. Works with the CCHS Board of Directors to develop strategic planning and policy and is responsible for implementing that policy.

5. Oversees the financial management of CCHS operations.

6. Plans and implements the yearly general operating budget.

7. Ensures the appropriate management of CCHS restricted accounts.

8. Develops and coordinates CCHS’s fund-raising efforts.

9. Ensures publicity for the museum is presented in the best possible light.

10. Serves as a liaison to the community through public appearances, speaking engagements, and involvement in community working groups.

11. Supervises and ensures the proper care and maintenance of the museum’s historic building.

12. Supervises and coordinates staff, providing direction and training.
